Shadow Education Minister visits Runcorn's Sandymoor freeschool
LABOUR’S Shadow Education Minister Stephen Twigg MP visited Halton’s first freeschool on Friday.
He toured Sandymoor School in Runcorn and chatted to staff, governors and pupils.
A new £10 million building is set to open in September, 2014, two years after five parents launched their innovative secondary school, funded directly from the government.
It currently has 100 pupils in years seven to nine. The new building will have space for 900 pupils.
Head teacher Andy Green Howard said: “Stephen was impressed with the strength of vision and fresh approaches to the curriculum that we are offering, including multi-age teaching, the integrated use of modern technology and links with local businesses.
“He seemed particularly impressed when he met a group from our market garden selling their tomatoes to staff.
“The principle of entrepreneurial opportunities was something he liked.
“It was great to show him what the freeschool agenda can provide in terms of opportunity and alternative choice.”
Conservative Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans also met the Minister.
