New post office opens at Tesco in Runcorn, saving 11 jobs
A NEW post office opened today inside the Tesco store at Runcorn’s Halton Lea shopping centre, saving 11 jobs.
The supermarket has taken over the franchise from WH Smith which closed on Saturday.
Tesco manager Andrew Stott said: “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to save 11 jobs and keep the service in Halton Lea shopping centre.
“We’ve had very positive feedback from customers. They say it is lovely, bright and airy.
“The post office will now be open the same hours as our store which means it will have extended trading hours and it will be open on a Sunday.”
The post office staff have now become Tesco employees and join the Runcorn store’s 85-strong workforce.
Staff have raised more than £4,000 for charity this year.
The post office will open Monday to Friday from 8am to 7pm, 8am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
A woman, staff only know as ‘Mabel’, who has shopped at Tesco for more than 30 years was invited to open the post office.
This is only the second Tesco Metro store in the country to have a post office. There are post offices in 56 Tesco Express stores.
