Widnes schoolgirl designs winning USA Tomahawk mascot
TOM the eagle will greet the USA Tomahawks squad when they arrive in Halton next month for the Rugby League World Cup 2013.
This colourful mascot was designed by nine-year-old Ellie Walsh-O’Neill from Dundalk Road, Widnes.
Halton children were challenged to use their imaginative skills to depice a Tomahawk, a golden eagle and the American flag.
The America players chose Ellie’s design from 400 entries.
She christened the eagle Tom after the Tomahawks. His shorts show off the stars of the American states while his top represents the team’s colours.
Ellie, a pupil at Spinney Avenue Primary School, described Tom as ‘friendly and cuddly’.
Her family are big Viking fans, attending all the games.
Ellie and Tom led out the Widnes Vikings at their game against Hull Kingston Rovers.
She won four tickets to watch the USA team in action against Wales in Wrexham on November 3, her 10th birthday.
The mascot has gone down a storm with Rugby League World Cup organisers and the USA team who congratulated Ellie and the Council.
Steven Johnson, American RLWC Team Manager, said: “You have done an outstanding job. We have kept the leadership group involved with this the whole way and they are all excited about working with you in the community during the tournament.”
Jon Dutton, RLWC 2013 Operations Director, added: “For us it adds to the colour and vibrancy of the tournament and is a magnificent example of a community adopting one of our competing nations.”
There will be lots of events happening to celebrate hosting the USA team who arrive in Halton on 19 October 19.
