Widnes science discovery centre gets a £78,000 makeover
GIANT panes of glass were gently hoisted hundreds of feet up into the air today as the iconic rooftop observatory of Catalyst was given a £78,000 makeover.
The viewing gallery of Widnes Science Discovery Centre was fitted with 42 new units of high performance structural double glazing in a delicate day long operation.
Trustee Stephen Youd-Thomas said: “We are extremely grateful to the Foyle Foundation and Biffa Award for their grants and for the support from Pilkingtons. They held their price for two years whilst our funding bids awaited approval.
“These new energy saving units will keep the observatory warmer in the winter and reduce the excessive temperatures of 40 degrees we get in the summer.”
It marks an exciting era at Catalyst which has seen record visitor soar to 27,000 and increasing numbers of scouts and brownies have enjoyed sleepovers.
Catalyst hopes to provide a viewing gallery and visitor centre for the new Mersey crossing when work starts in the New Year.
