Toddler escapes from Windmill Hill Nursery in Runcorn
9:10pm Thursday 5th September 2013 in News
AN investigation is under way after a toddler escaped from a Runcorn nursery and walked half a mile back to her home alone.
Two-year-old Louise Hilton managed to leave the privately-run Windmill Hill Nursery without anyone noticing shortly after lunchtime on Wednesday.
Mum Samantha O'Connor, who had walked her daughter to nursery that morning, said she was stunned when she heard a knock on the door and found Louise standing there.
Her route included walking through underground subways, woodland and past a pub.
Today, Thursday, Cheshire Police confirmed they had referred the case to Halton Council for further investigation.
A police spokesman said: “We are aware of an incident involving a two year-old girl who left a Runcorn nursery and walked home alone.
"She arrived back at her parents home, after lunch, at around 1.50pm.
"At this stage of the investigation it is believed the child escaped after workmen left a door open.
"The child was unharmed and the matter has been referred to the local authority."
Windmill Hill Nursery was unavailable for comment but a Halton Council spokesman said: "Windmill Hill is a private and voluntary setting, which is registered with Ofsted.
"The council has been providing advice and support to the nursery following notification of the incident."
