Halton Trading Standards warns of bogus free phone service
RESIDENTS are warned to beware of automated messages offering free telephone calls.
Halton and Warrington Trading Standards is warning people about automated calls that have been received by residents on their landlines offering free telephone calls if the recipient presses the ‘2’ key on their phone.
If they do press the button they are put through to a sales person who will then try to persuade them to leave their current telephone service provider and switch to that of the caller.
These calls are described as free but in fact there is a monthly charge made after joining the service that may amount to more than the consumer is already paying for their current service.
Trading Standards wants to remind people to be cautious when dealing with cold callers and to be aware that services offered may not be the bargains that they initially appear to be.
