Attempted Runcorn burglar jailed by cigarette butt
4:00pm Monday 19th August 2013 in News
A HAPLESS burglar who was identified by a dropped cigarette butt has been jailed.
Sean Meadows, of Halton YMCA, pleaded guilty on the first day of his trial on Wednesday to attempting to burgle a house in Runcorn.
The court heard how the intended victim was woken at around 1.40am on April 9 2013 and discovered three men in dark clothing trying to open the back door.
Judge Nicholas Woodward said when sentencing Meadows: “The parents and young children were all in occupation on the night of the offence.”
The men ran off but police discovered a discarded cigarette butt near the patio door and DNA testing matched that of 24-year-old Meadows.
Anthony O’Donohoe, defending said: “I invite the court not to impose a sentence that will deprive a young man of hope or his whole youth will be spent in custody, receiving longer and longer sentences.”
This was Meadows sixth appearance in court for similar offences, the last of which he had received a three-year sentence for.
Jamie Coutts, prosecuting, said: “The victim still has a sense of anger that people dare to try and enter his property and hasn’t known many full nights sleep since due to having flashbacks. He investigates any sound that wakes him.”
Meadows was sentenced to three years and seven months at Warrington Crown Court.
