Updated: Two lanes of Runcorn Widnes bridge now open

Two lanes of traffic ar now open on the Runcorn Widnes bridge - one in each direction.

The Runcorn Widnes bridge closed this morning due to ice and snow.

Huge slabs of ice have fallen on cars.

One vehicle is believed to have had its windscreen shattered.

Drivers are advised to find alternative routes.

Long delays are expected as traffic builds up on roads near the bridge.

A Halton Council spokesman said: "The Silver Jubilee Bridge has been closed due to blocks of snow falling from the Bridge itself onto the carriageway below.

"The situation is under review."
