Halton residents are warned to be on their guard when using cash machines
FRAUDSTERS have stolen money from innocent customers at cash points using various con tricks.
Halton residents are warned to be on their guard.
DC Tony Condon, from Cheshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit, said: "There have been an increasing number of attacks on ATMs, where the fraudsters use different methods to obtain money from innocent victims.
“ATM users do not know they are victims until they realise their account balance has reduced more than normal.
“We are asking all members of the public to be vigilant when using a cash machine and to be aware of any suspicious activity.”
Con men have used their mobile phones to video pin numbers of ATM users.
They have also attached equipment which will read and copy the details on the magnetic strip of the card.
This information can be transferred on to a new card and, with the pin number, they can withdraw money from the victims account.Devices have blocked money, giving customers the impression the machine is broken. The fraudster then collects the cash.
Anyone who suspects they may have been an ATM victim can contact Cheshire Police on 101.
