Sandymoor burglar who laughed at single mum is jailed
12:30pm Tuesday 12th February 2013 in News
A 20-YEAR-OLD man who laughed at a screaming single mum as he ransacked her house has been jailed for two years.
Scott Robertson, of Chatteris Park, Sandymoor, was sentenced at Warrington Crown Court on Monday.
Recorder D Williams said: “I can’t imagine what a woman would feel at six o’clock in the morning, hearing noises in her house, going downstairs and seeing two lads.
“It’s unimaginable.
“It’s not just burglary she was thinking about, it was her own safety.
“You laughed at her, and taunted her in effect.
“You then made off with your ill-gotten gains.
“I do take into account your mother’s letter but you see Mr Robertson, the world is full of people that have had deprived upbringings but they don’t go breaking into the houses of women and laugh at them.”
The court heard how Robertson and another man sabotaged a CCTV camera before breaking into the house on Fenwick Lane in Runcorn on February 18 last year.
The mum, her infant son and elderly mum were asleep at the time.
He stole £300 in cash – the elderly woman’s pension – along with an iPod and iPhone.
The court also heard Robertson has a previous conviction for burglary in May 2011.
Defending, Hannah Brookfield said he committed the burglary to feed his cannabis habit.
She said: “There was no violence or weapon used.
“This is a young man who is easily influenced by his peers.
“The items taken weren’t sentimental.”
Robertson was sentenced to two years in a Young Offenders’ Institute.
