A 49-YEAR-OLD has been arrested following an attempted armed robbery at Golden Square.

Police were called to Thompsons in the town centre on Saturday at 4.40pm.

They say a man entered the shop and threatened staff with what appeared to be a gun. He stole money before leaving.

A 49-year-old man was subsequently arrested in High Street, Runcorn, shortly after and is currently being quizzed by detectives.

A quantity of cash and a gun were seized – this later transpired to be an imitation firearm, BB gun.

Anyone with any information should call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 764 of October 27.
