Residents warned to keep doors and windows shut after plastics blaze
FIRE chiefs today warned Halton residents to keep doors and windows closed following the inferno which ripped through a Widnes recycling centre last week.
Firefighters are still fighting the fire at JL Sortings in Johnsons Lane, Halton View, nine days after the blaze broke out.
A Halton Council spokesman said: “Though there is still thought to be no severe risks to public health, heavy overnight rain on Saturday and a change of wind direction mean that air-borne particulates may now be coming closer to the ground, especially in the area of Fiddlers Ferry power station.
“The advice to the public is to keep doors and windows closed, and if affected by a sore throat when outside to return indoors. ”
At the height of the inferno, more than 60 firefighters and 15 fire engines tackled the blaze.
Crews were called at 9.35pm on Sunday, October 21, as thousands of tons of recycled plastics burned.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
