Hero dog saves owner
Exclusive By Steve Kelly

A DOG saved a woman after she was sexually assaulted in an alleyway.

Brave pooch Stitch, a German shepherd cross, leaped into action when owner Sarah Lewis, aged 27, was grabbed and groped by a man.

Sarah, who waived her right to anonymity, said: "I am so glad that I had Stitch with me. God knows what might have happened if I was alone.

"(Stitch) wouldn't hurt a fly, but he jumped up and startled the man. That gave me the chance to escape."

The pervert, who was carrying a litter picker, pounced in an alley between Vine Street and Eton Street, Runcorn, at 11.30pm.

"It was awful," she said. "At first I thought he was asking to look at the bins because they had all been put out the night before, but he put his hand over my mouth and started touching me. He was being very forceful.

"I remember he just kept saying it will be over and done with soon'."

"Stitch jumped up and the man moved round to see what he was doing. That gave me the chance to knee him and I managed to get away.

"I ran home and had to wash my clothes. I could still smell the man's aftershave on them. It was disgusting.

"I was shaking like a leaf and very scared. I was shocked that this sort of thing could happen to me."

Sarah added that she hoped the man, who remains at large following the April 11 attack, is caught quickly.

"To think that this could happen to someone else is not worth thinking about," she said. "He needs to be taken off the streets before it happens again."

The man was white, about 6ft, in his early 40s, medium build. He had unkempt black hair and a black beard.

He wore a three-quarter length high-visibility jacket, dark trousers, light trainers.

DC Moira Hay, of Runcorn Neighbourhood Investigations Team, said: "This was a despicable attack on a young woman and through sheer luck was able to get away."

Anyone with information should contact DC Hay on 01244 613936 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
