I AM writing regarding the news of the threatened closure of Jodrell Bank in Cheshire.

Why are British scientists at one of the world's most advanced observatories being faced with closure of its flagship project (Merlin) and Jodrell Bank, being the home of the landmark Lovell telescope, when we - and the Government are stating - are encouraging more interest in science subjects/education of young children and people, due to the lack of involved choice in science education/careers?

Is Jodrell Bank - something else of British achievement - to be sacrificed? Patrick Moore, who has evoked interest and fun promoting science education to millions, was moved to tears in a recent Sky at Night programme about this.

I know many people in Cheshire and Merseyside are concerned as to what is happening to Jodrell Bank, which the Science and Technology Funding Council has identified for closure. This is a world-renowned centre playing a key role in the scientific community, inspiring not only local children and residents, but those across the country.

I hope Runcorn and Widnes World will champion this cause.

The local MPs, Paul Rowen and Mark Hunter are campaigning hard to save this important institution. We also seriously hope that the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, will reconsider the financial situation regarding the Merlin Project in a more positive light.
