Turning Leaf Pinot Noir 2009, £7.49, widely available
A tale of two Pinot's this week – to show how delightfully different two wines from the same grape can be, writes Nick Nunn.
First from California and possibly the world's biggest wine producer, Gallo, is a tasty cherry and raspberry-flavoured Pinot Noir at a reasonable entry-level price.
It's very pleasant, screw-topped, 12.5% alcohol and just the thing for everyday drinking.
Villa Maria Reserve Pinot Noir 2008, £17.99, Tesco
Villa Maria is probably New Zealand's largest brand in sales terms across this country but, as they used to say in Monty Python sketches it's a case of "and now for something completely different!"
The cherry flavours are there but they are layed and you can almost taste individual black and red ones! Sumptuous is a word that comes to mind along with bags of texture. Big at 14% and big in price but an extra special wine – the difference between the Premiership and League 2.
