THE world’s only portable, inflatable walk-through lung exhibit came to Halton to warn residents of the dangers of cancer.

Lung cancer is the UK’s biggest cancer killer, claiming almost 35,000 lives a year.

The mega lungs visited Runcorn Shopping Centre and Morrisons in Widnes, and were provided by the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Visitors were able to step inside the human lung model, learn about the various structures and normal lung functions, and observe examples of lung trauma and disease.

‘Get Checked’ volunteers answered questions about cancer and informed people of the signs to look out for.

A spokesman for Halton Health Improvement Team, said: “Early detection of lung cancer makes it more treatable, so encouraging people to recognise symptoms such as a persistent cough and see their doctor sooner could save lives.

“Although it is more common in smokers, around one in eight people with lung cancer has never smoked.

“A cough that lasts for three weeks or more is the most common symptom of lung cancer.”

Other symptoms include:

• A cough that has got worse or changes

• Repeated chest infections

• Coughing up blood

• Breathlessness

• Feeling more tired than usual for some time

• Losing weight for no obvious reason

• An ache or pain in the chest or shoulder that has lasted some time

Halton Health Improvement Team’s Stop Smoking Service has helped thousands of people quit smoking. If you are a smoker, giving up smoking is the most effective way of reducing your chances of getting the lung cancer.
